Nektar Panorama P1

I have been looking for something like this for a very long time! -As a long time Cubase user I have been frustrated by the lack of feel when adjusting EQ, VSTis etc. Theres something not as instant or usable as twiddling knobs - The P1 handles this in a very elegant fashion. EQ is now 'twidlleable' to your hearts content and is so much easier to adjust in realtime, The VSTis, especially the synths are far more versatile than their small feature set would indicate when you can tweak and hear the effect straight away.The bright sharp colour screen is very useful and provides excellent feedback on the state of the active controls. Having the illuminated, dedicated transport buttons is great and almost worth the price on its own! As a Reason user this device also transforms some of the more inaccessible functions on Maelstrom and Thor open and reactive. I've created more new sounds from these since I bought the P1 than in the many years previously that I owned Reason!

Because of its versatility the P1 takes some getting used to - some of the functions involve the use of function and tab keys but these become 2nd nature after a while. The manuals online take you through various learning processes (although the font is a little small and I cant see a way to conveniently print them out) and it is definitely essential to go through them all - unlike many devices there is a lot you may miss without them!

Build quality is excellent - the knobs and faders feel great and as the finish it sooo black and shiny they have thoughtfully including a cleaning cloth!

All in all a great device and as other programs are added it can only get better!

Ich brauchte einen DAW-Controller mit möglichst vielen und gut verarbeiteten Knöpfen und Reglern und einer intuitiven Bedienung, also "deep integration" in Programme, vor allem Logic Pro X. Wie man in vielen Foren lesen kann, bringt Nektar immer wieder Updates für die Mappings ihrer Geräte. Auch eine Mailanfrage wurde schnell aus Amerika beantwortet, die PDF-Dokumentation ist gut. Alle Bewertungen der Panorama-Geräte vor 2015 (auch die Amazona-Rezension hier auf der Produktseite) sind inzwischen obsolet, was den Software-Support betrifft.

Ein paar Beispiele: Mit Retro Synth von Logic Pro X kann sich der P1 voll entfalten. Alle Parameter sind intuitiv erreichbar, die Fader werden zu ADSR-Reglern für Amplifier und Filter. Ich habe zum ersten Mal das Gefühl, mit einem Software Synth Sounds bauen zu können. Wenn es ein Gerät gibt, das Software organisch in Hardware übersetzen kann, dann das hier. Es ist eine Menge wert, wenn man nichts selber zuweisen muss.

Auch Native Instruments Komplete wird unterstützt.
Praktisch ist das Gerät auch zum Abstimmen von EQs, Effekten etc. Es gibt sogar eine Step Sequencer-Funktion, allerdings nur unter Bitwig. Würde ich mir auch für Logic wünschen.

Seit OSX El Capitan funktionieren die Panorama-Geräte class compliant, also ohne Treiber. Dafür kann man keine Tastatur-Makrobefehle mehr benutzen. Bei Logic brauche ich das nicht, weil ich ohnehin viel mit der Tastatur arbeite.

Die Keyboard-Tastatur von P4 und P6 gefiel mir nicht, zuviel Plastik-Feeling. Einen Designpreis bekommt auch das P1 nicht, denn die glänzende Oberfläche und die verwendeten Schriftarten verkaufen das Innere des Geräts unter Wert. Und da das P1 niemals ein Design-Klassiker werden wird, wird es auch niemals Zubehör wie Skins (ähnlich MPC) oder Ständer geben.

Und da kommen wir auch gleich zu einem schweren Design-Makel: die Abschrägung der Vorderkante. Das Gerät lässt sich nicht senkrecht aufstellen. Vom Support habe ich einen Tipp für einen Ständer bekommen, mit dem man den P1 schräg aufstellen kann, sodass das Display gut zu sehen ist: der eBoot Mesh Laptop Stand. Man muss allerdings noch Anti-Rutsch-Streifen (Moosgummi o.ä.) an die Unterkante kleben.

Irgendwo im Internet hat jemand bemängelt, dass die Knöpfe und Fader nicht beleuchtet seien. Das entspricht aber auch nicht dem Konzept, da alles, was es abzulesen gibt, auf dem Display steht, wahlweise auf dem Computerdisplay. Die Anordnung der Bedienelemente lässt es m.E. zu, alle Positionen blind zu finden.

Ich habe das Gerät erst knapp einen Monat im Einsatz, daher kann ich noch nichts zur Haltbarkeit sagen. Für den Live-Gebrauch wäre zu überlegen, ob sich die Anfertigung eines Thon-Cases lohnt. Ansonsten passt das Gerät auch gerade noch so in einen Rucksack.
