I was looking for a pedal that can give my ash Telecaster Deluxe HH pickups a subtle mid push, some sweetness and roundness that a mahogany body usually provides. I have a bunch of overdrives but none of them could do it properly: either too much artificial mids, strident high mids, or too dark. Then I consideres pedals marketed as boosters, just most of them are either fully transparent or I could confirm nowhere what they do to your tone. Finally, I stumbled upon this pedal while browsing pedals and immediately clicked, because I knew about it and the original it was based on! I decided to give the affordable version a try and this was it, does exactly what I expected. I am determined to buy the original in the future.
I am using the pedal pretty much for the purpose I described above, just revoicing, no extra gain. I am keeing Drive and Focus at a minimum, and Volume to unity, to just get that round and warm tone I was looking for. It is completely clean and the difference is very subtle, but then it's what I wanted. Diming the Focus, the tone becomes slightly more crunchy, I'd compare it to that of a maple semi-hollow I owned.
The differences in tone become much more pronounced if the Drive is increased, from thick to snappy, but it also becomes dirtier. It can be easily used as an overdrive in the traditional sense. A lot of tones can be obtained out of this small box.
